About
Northern Utah Insight is a Buddhist meditation community that encompasses multiple sanghas(communities) in the Insight Meditation Tradition in Northern Utah with practitioners all over the Intermountain West.
NUI has a volunteer coordinating council that serves these sanghas and assists in creating and hosting events and retreats, curating content for newsletters and offerings, and managing NUI’s donations.
Guiding Teachers
Sam Akers
Sam is a guiding teacher and co-creator for Northern Utah Insight. She makes meditation accessible to all who wish to practice by explaining in easy-to-understand terms with a step-by-step approach. Her foremost intention is to lead with the heart practices so that they may hold difficulties that can arise from Insight practices. Sam has trained through MTI in Berkeley and has mentored others through the Mindfulness Institute, studied and taught with George Haas in Meditation x Attachment with Metta Group and is currently training with Gil Fronsdal through the Sati Center to become a Buddhist Eco-Chaplain.
Sam is a Yoga Therapist who leads trainings under her own umbrella of TheraYoga and is a faculty member with Soma Yoga Institute. When she is not leading trainings and Dhamma, she enjoys leading sound baths.
Sam is also a supervising mentor with Mark Coleman and Martin Aylward’s Mindfulness Training Institute in Berkeley CA.

Tim Slocum
Tim Slocum serves as a Dharma teacher for Northern Utah Insight. He has practiced the meditation and the Dharma since the late 1990s. His practice has centered on the Insight Meditation tradition with the guidance of Susie Harrington. His practice has also been strongly influenced by the teachings of Stephen Batchelor, Rob Burbea, Sayadaw U Tejaniya, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Joseph Goldstein. Tim co-founded the Cache Valley Sangha in 1998 and has actively participated throughout its existence.
